Cool text editor 2005-11-20 10:08:38
Found a great editor for styles and pretty much everything else. If anyone wants to give it a shot.
The program's called Html-kit and can be found here http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

When you first start it:
Go to, Preferences. From that go to the 'File types' and click on 'User' on the left hand side. Hit the 'Add file type'.. a dialogue box will pop up saying file type.
I just put "Blackbox Styles (*.style)" and hit ok
After that has been done, you'll see the 'Edit File Type Extensions:' become activated. Put in *.style;.style and tag anywhere in the file types window and it will be added.
Now the program will have .style files listed as an extention in the open and save dialogue box.

Interesting thing about the program is it's use of snippits and the fact you can save a file as a template. I saved my most used style format as a template with empty color values, now all I have to do is go to the 'File -- New From Page Wizard -- user' then select my saved style template.

Another really hot feature about the program is it's built in color picker. It has defineable color pallets, a roaming color picker, and an option to bring in a bitmap and grab the colors from it and create a pallet.
You simply put the cursor where you're going to plug in the color value, click the color picker icon in the toolbar and choose the color you want, and the program plugs it into the document.

It's also a tabbed style notepad for those not wanting editors all over the screen.

anywho, tons of features and it's free.. give it a shot... Peace

Forgot to mention: I also set it to recognize .3dc files so they to can be listed in the open and save box. Do the same with those as you did with .style files just add: 3dcc Theme files (*.3dc) for the File type and *.3dc;.3dc for the 'Edit File Type Extensions:' part and you're all set.

Pitkon COOL, Breed... U r an inquisitive fellow - and a mine of information... :D
cthu1hu Amazing software. Can't believe it's freeware.
Nightbreed Yeah,.. would be great if enough people started using it so we could set up a repository of blackbox related scripts, plugins, templates and others. I read through the plugin creation tutorial, seems easy enough to generate a quiet a few blackbox related ones.
auto Nice find!
Stocker Not taking any credit on the software/software makers/software finder, I'm just curious: does anybody else feels Emacs is still enough for this job (style/bb files editing)? (warning - it's a simple honest question, not a flame war start, nor a religious offense :) )
cthu1hu Had to go and mention emacs, lol.
ArthurDent Emacs rules for me.. but then I can't use that editor anyway as I'm on Linux. I should look into style syntax highlighting for emacs.. never done that before. Lisp scares me though.
Nightbreed Stocker, if I felt that the program's only purpose was to create styles, I wouldn't have posted this. I use emacs when I'm using my linux boxes, but not too often. I only made news containing style for the simple fact that, this is what this site is about. The other point is to prove information to something that would be comfortable to a majority of users. Sure I could have gone into the other features of the program, but what significance would it hold to this site?
Stocker Nightbreed, I just realized my typo on my post: replace "not taking any credit ON" with "not taking any credit FROM"! (sorry...) I too think it's great to have multiple alternatives to do style editing. My bringing up Emacs was only to check if any of you used it to this purpose, and, if so, if you had the need to do some tweaking - given that syntax highlightning and templates are built-in in the main program. Again, I'm trying to make a peacefull post. As for the scope of the program, I agree this not the place to discuss it, and I'd appreciate this comments thread not to go into anything other than style/bb-files editing. One last thing - after checking out html-kit, I find it's (apparantly) nice, and it'd be a great choice for me, wasn't I an Emacs addicted guy! :D
Nightbreed Believe me Stocker, emacs has been an ultimate aide on my linux boxes.. Saved me a great deal of times. I think that was the first text editor I actually memorized it's shortcut keys for..lol
Stocker Eheh, that's prolly because most other apps share the same shortcuts! Well, if someone is interested on modding emacs to suite our bb-styling needs, feel free to mail me with questions and or suggestions - i'd be glad to help (i know how messed up the emacs learning curve can be, without some good pointers!)
Fatman Also worth mentioning on the same website is Favicon From Pics, which is handy for web developers. I can't count the number of times I've used it recently... also can't count how many times I forgot the URL and had to Google it. :P
freeb0rn I swear by PSPad, check it out: link
enginecamel I've tried this tool before, and I find it kind of foreign in use. Sorry.
